Motown (Motor Town) Records, one of the most influential record labels in the history of soul music, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2009.
The label, originally called Tamla
(Tamla Motown), was founded by
songwriter and
businessman Berry Gordy
in the US city of
Detroit. Motown is an
abbreviation for "Motor
Town" what stands for
"Detroit".
He started the label in
January 12th 1959, from
a studio in his cellar,
with an $800 loan from
his father.
Berry Gordy sold his
ownership in Motown to
MCA and Boston Ventures
in June 1988 for $61
million.
Today the label
is a subsidiary of
Universal Music Group.
Motown played an
important role in the
racial integration of
popular music, as it was
the first record label
owned by an African
American to primarily
feature African-American
artists who achieved
crossover success.
In
the 1960s, Motown and
its soul-based
subsidiaries were the
most successful
proponents of what came
to be known as The
Motown Sound, a style of
soul music with a
distinct pop influence.
Over the course of its
history, the Motown
Corporation has owned or
distributed more than 45
labels in varying
genres. Besides that,
Motown Records boasts
nearly 200 No1 songs worldwide, and has
produced stars from
Stevie Wonder, Mary
Wells and Marvin Gaye to
Jr Walker & The All
Stars, The Temptations
and The Supremes.
In
2009 Motown celebrates
its 50th anniversary!
